Telling Stories About Farm to Table

The farmers and artisan crafters in the farm to table movement are walking narratives of the will to live with integrity, dignity and a commitment to something both intensely personal and at the same time much greater than themselves.

This message from Zachery Adam Cohen delivered in February 2010 continues to resonate and echo among citizen journalists and documentary makers.

In his view, the creativity, devotion and grit of local organic growers and artisan crafters can be the antidote to the break down our food system and economy is undergoing.
Well I think there is a light at the end of this national food nightmare that we are currently experiencing. I see a very bright future for America and, as those of us in the movement know, it all starts each and every day, with the food we eat. For me, this is the departure point for the stories we need to tell. We need to connect that daily, rather quotidian act of eating, into a series of sacred moments where the people, places and stories of the sustainable food movement are elevated into something almost religious.

Why Austin Fresh

I started Austin Fresh - Artisan Farm to Table with the idea to tell stories about people in the Austin farm to table movement who grow, craft, cook, eat and live from the heart.

I've long wanted to be involved in this field beyond cooking and eating grass-fed beef, organic produce, artisan-roasted coffee and chocolate I buy at weekend farmer's markets.

Why a consumer would buy local is a bit of a no brainer.

Anyone who has ever compared the texture and flavor of a fresh-off-the-vine tomato with one purchased at a grocery store can tell you fresh, home-grown is way better.

There are other benefits - health, environmental, economic. But fresh, local, organic had me at "tastes better!"

That's me.

Why are the vendors at farmer's markets week in and out, come rain or shine?

Setting up a booth in a shopping mall parking lot every weekend seems like a tough way to make a living. And market is just one aspect of their effort which often begins every day before dawn and continues long after dark, sometimes after their day jobs.

Who are these people? What are their dreams? What are their strengths and struggles? How do they help us? How can we help them? How does sustainable farm to market help us all?

In the coming weeks, I want to introduce you to some of the growers, gardeners, artisan crafters and chefs who have a mission, passion or gift to bring farm to table deep in the heart of Texas.

I'm also look forward to connecting with the many Austin locavores who are crazy about fresh, organic, artisan-crafted edible, medicinal and wearable farm to table goods. Who knew they were so passionate and so many?
